What Conduit does, what it does not do, and who is responsible for what.
Conduit prepares Making Tax Digital returns from the bank data you give it, and submits them to HMRC once a person has approved them.
Conduit is software, not your accountant. It does not give tax advice. Where it suggests a category, an allowance or an amount to set aside, that is a suggestion based on what it can see, and the responsibility for what is filed stays with you.
Nothing reaches HMRC until a named person ticks a declaration confirming the figures are correct. That is a legal statement — the same one you would make on a paper return — and the software cannot make it for you. This is built into how Conduit works, not a setting.
If you have chosen an accountant to file for you, only they can sign off. If you file yourself, only you can. Either way a person is accountable, and the record shows who.
Giving us complete and accurate data. Conduit can only categorise what you upload; income paid into an account you have not given us is income we cannot see, and a return built without it will be wrong.
Checking the figures before you approve them. Every one traces back to a line in your file, and the reasoning is shown.
Telling us when something is wrong. A category can be corrected, a file replaced, and a filed quarter amended.
Estimates are estimates. The tax figures Conduit shows — what you will owe, what to set aside, what a claim might save — are projections from the data we hold. HMRC’s own calculation is the figure that counts, and where the two differ we show you both.
We cannot guarantee HMRC accepts a submission. If it is rejected, we tell you and record why. Nothing is reported as filed unless HMRC confirms it.
Conduit is in early access. It may be unavailable at times. Deadlines remain yours to meet — we send reminders, but a reminder that fails to arrive does not move a deadline.
Categorisation and the assistant cost money to run, so they are metered. You can see your balance and what it buys at any time, and work is refused before it starts rather than half-completed if you run out.
You can stop using Conduit whenever you like and ask us to delete your account. Returns already filed with HMRC, and the record of how they were arrived at, cannot be deleted — tax records must be kept, and the decision trail is append-only by design. See Privacy.
